Bangladesh capital city stops dog culls

DHAKA,  Bangladesh— “We have stopped culling except for some emergency cases,  such as when rabid dogs attack schoolchildren,” Dhaka health services chief Brigadier General Nasiruddin Ahmed told Agence France-Press on August 25,  2011.

Instead,  the Bangadesh Health Department and the animal advocacy group Obhoyaronnyo have sent six veterinarians to Help In Suffering in Jaipur,  India,  to learn how to manage an Animal Birth Control program. Read more

Ocean Park will not import wild belugas

HONG KONG--Ocean Park chair Allan Zeman on August 29,  2011 announced that the Hong Kong exhibition facility had decided against importing six wild-caught beluga whales from Russia for inclusion in a Polar Adventure attraction scheduled to open in 2012.  “Everyone can rest assured no belugas from the wild will be imported into Ocean Park–not from Russia or from anywhere else,”  Zeman told media. Vier Pfoten leads rescue mission to Tripoli Zoo

TRIPOLI–Veterinarian Amir Khalil of the Austrian-based international animal charity Vier Pfoten on September 9,  2011 led a rescue team to the aid of the 700 animals at the Tripoli Zoo.  Vier Pfoten is believed to be the first animal charity allowed to work in Libya in more than 40 years.

 

North Carolina Zoo director David Jones and the International Fund for Animal Welfare had raised $10,000 to help the rescue,  Jones said on the North Carolina Zoo web site. Read more

Humane Society of the U.S. cuts deal with United Egg Producers to seek federal law

WASHINGTON D.C.–“For years we’ve been clashing with the United Egg Producers over the treatment of laying hens,”  e-mailed Humane Society of the U.S. factory farming campaign manager Paul Shapiro from a July 7,  2011 press conference.  “If someone had told me that we’d be doing a joint press conference with the UEP,  I’d have thought they’d eaten some bad egg replacer. But indeed, that’s exactly what’s happening right now.  We’re announcing that both the UEP and HSUS will endorse federal legislation intended to improve the treatment of the 280 million laying hens used in the U.S. each year.” Read more

Dogs Deserve Better founder’s marriage begins with groom in doghouse

LEFT–Dogs Deserve Better founder Tamara Ci Thayne and
longtime anti-chaining campaign supporter Joe Horvath were married on
June 20, 2011 on the Pennsylvania State Capitol steps in Harrisburg,
concluding Thayne’s annual “chain-off” demonstration in pursuit of a
state law prohibiting dog tethering as a primary means of
confinement. Thayne, who has chained herself to doghouses in public
places every summer since 2004, spent 52 days in 2010 chained in
front of the Pennsylvania State Capitol. Thayne and Horvath were
joined at the 2011 demo by about 75 other protesters, 25 of whom
also spent the day chained to doghouses.

Pennsylvania Bureau of Dog Law shake-up worries anti-puppy mill campaigners

HARRISBURG–Jesse Smith, heading the Pennsylvania Bureau of
Dog Law Enforcement since 2006, was on June 15, 2011 transferred to
the Office of Chief Counsel, where she said she would be “putting
together a USDA-sponsored agricultural mediation program.”
Replacing Smith, Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture
secretary George D. Greig announced, is Lynn Diehl. Greig
introduced Diehl as “a lifelong animal lover with a magnitude of
management skills.” Greig also announced that Pennsylvania Governor
Tom Corbett is “transitioning the Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement to
the Dog Law Enforcement Office. The office will report directly to
the department’s Executive Deputy Secretary Mike Pechart,” Greig
said, “ensuring its functions are handled at the highest level.”

NAIROBI, PARIS, DAR ES SALAAM, WASHINGTON D.C.–The
United Nations Educational & Scientific Organization on June 24,
2011 declared victory over the Tanzanian government plan to build a
highway crossing Serengeti National Park, but apparently had not
examined the details of the letter from Tanzanian Natural Resources
and Tourism Minister Ezekiel Maige that prompted the celebration.
“The Serengeti road project has not been abandoned. We have
just revised it. I don’t know where all this confusion comes from,”
Maige told Reuters reporter Fumbuka Ng’wanakilala on July 1, 2011.

Protesters confront fur trade in Seoul

SEOUL–Fur will be exhibited after all at a June 2, 2011
show by the Italian fashion house Fendi on a new artificial “floating
island” in the Han River in downtown Seoul. But there will be less
fur, city officials said on May 23, after announcing on May 16 that
fur would be banned to avoid confrontation with protesters organized
by the local group Coexistence of Animal Rights on Earth.
Fendi “originally planned to present 20 fur items,” reported
Agence France-Presse. “A Seoul city official said Fendi pledged to
‘redesign’ the lineup to reduce the number of fur items displayed.”
In response, Coexist-ence of Animal Rights on Earth “called for
protesters to picket the show,” AFP added.
