Who is helping to fight bullfighters?

Why are none of the major international animal advocacy
organizations currently campaigning against bullfighting?
This should be priority #1. Bullfighting is nothing more
than a traditional spectacle of sadism. It keeps the floor of animal
welfare at a low level. For example, how can one criticize brutal
treatment of animals in slaughterhouses when bulls are allowed to be
tortured to death in public? There is no place on earth where people
have not seen pictures of bleeding bulls and “brave” matadors and
cheering crowds, and such representations have a desensitizing
effect on children everywhere. Bullfighters have tried to stage
bullfights in such places as China, where there is no tradition of
it, trying to whet the appetite for sadistic spectacles.

DELHI, CHENNAI–Collecting current data about disease
incidence in India since 2003, the Indian Central Bureau of Health
Intelligence has known for nearly 10 years that the oft-claimed
Indian human rabies death toll of 20,000 per year is high by a factor
of nearly 100.
Often cited by politicians and media, the 20,000 figure has
repeatedly inflamed rabies panics, including street dog massacres
and mob attacks on humane societies that participate in the federally
sponsored Animal Birth Control program. Funded by the Animal Welfare
Board of India since2003, the ABC program seeks to replace lethal
dog population control with sterilization.

Appellate Court upholds animal fighting ban

RICHMOND, Virginia–A three-judge panel from the U.S. Court
of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit on April 20, 2012 unanimously
affirmed that Congress has the constitutional authority to prohibit
animal fighting. The verdict upheld federal legislation passed in
2007 that created felony penalties for cockfighting and dogfighting
in cases involving interstate transport of participants, animals,
money, or fighting paraphernalia. The 2007 legislation reinforced
sections of the federal Animal Welfare Act which have been in effect
since 1976, but previously carried only misdemeanor penalties.

Humane Society of the U.S. sends a message via Kreider & Burger King

MIAMI, PHILADELPHIA–The Humane Society
of the U.S. on April 12, 2012 disclosed
undercover video of horrific conditions at a
Kreider Farms egg ranch in Man-heim,
Pennsylvania–an erstwhile ally in seeking
passage of HR 3798, the proposed federal bill to
mandate larger cage sizes for laying hens.
On April 25, 2012, less than two weeks
later, HSUS president Wayne Pacelle lauded
Burger King for announcing that by 2017 all
Burger King eggs and pork products are to come
from cage-free hens and pigs raised without use
of gestation stalls.

MANILA, COLUMBUS, Ohio– Incidents on opposite sides of the
world have rekindled debate over the wisdom of expending humane
resources to try to rehome dogs of known violent history and behavior.
Within the space of 10 days:
* The Philippine Animal Welfare Society took temporary
custody of 266 pit bulls who were seized on March 30, 2012 from a
dogfighting ring in San Pablo, Laguna, the Philippines.
* Three small children and an 18-year-old woman in different
parts of the U.S. suffered disfiguring injuries inflicted by recently
rehomed pit bulls.

King Juan Carlos, honorary head of World Wildlife Fund/Spain, apologizes for shooting elephant

MADRID–King Juan Carlos of Spain is for
the time being still honorary president of the
Spanish arm of the World Wildlife Fund, as he
has been since it was formed in 1968, but an
April 20, 2012 public apology for participating
in an ill-fated $60,000 elephant hunt in Botswana
did not quell calls for his ouster or
resignation–even from within the pro-hunting WWF.

Euthanasia is not a topic for casual discussion over lunch,
but is a part of every veterinarian’s practice. Ending a 12-year-old
dog’s pain and suffering can be a relief. On the other hand,
shelter vets may feel emotionally raw. How can a person euthanize a
6-month-old tail-wagging dog, or a two-year-old purring cat, and
not hate the job?
