WELLINGTON, New Zealand––Forty-eight percent of New Zealand households keep cats, the highest rate of cat-keeping in the world, according to the New Zealand Pet Food Manufacturers Association. But prominent New Zealand birders disagree over whether free-roaming pet cats and feral cats have much to do with losses of rare bird species. Economist Gareth Morgan argues that cats should be eradicated from New Zealand through universal sterilization and non-replacement. Read more

MELBOURNE––Run since 1861 on the first Tuesday of each November, fourteen years longer than the Kentucky Derby, the Melbourne Cup is marketed as “’The race that stops a nation.” What stopped Australian attention most in November 2012, though, may have been undercover video posted online by the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses, showing injured racehorses being shot dead at the Laverton Knackery west of Melbourne. KARACHI–Twenty-two thousand Australian sheep on September 22, 2012 won at least a temporary reprieve from being culled in Pakistan, and were still alive two days later while the Sindh High Court reviewed evidence submitted by Rafiq Khanani of the Dow Univesity of Health Sciences that the sheep had not contracted serious diseases during prolonged transport aboard the Ocean Drover. No deal for Macau greyhounds
MACAU–It was a cruel April Fool for dozens of greyhounds, the U.S. organization Grey 2K, Animals Aust-ralia, and the Macau animal rescue society Anima. Macau media reported on April 1, 2012 that Anima and the Macau Yat Yuen Canidrome Company Ltd. had signed an agreement to allow Anima to rehome ex-racing greyhounds, a first in the 82-year history of the Macau Canidrome. Nevada casino owner Steve Wynn had reportedly donated $250,000 to build kennels for the rescued dogs. Read more

JAKARTA, MELBOURNE–– Australian cattle and sheep exporters barely had time to anticipate ramped up live animal shipments to Islamic nations, under new protocols announced on October 21, 2011 by agriculture minister Joe Ludwig, when word came from Jakarta that Indonesia is likely to accept barely half as many live cattle from Australia as were landed in 2011.
