 NEW YORK CITY–Superstorm Sandy hit the U.S. animal rescue community somewhat like a small child falling down stairs.  First came the shocking impact,  then a surprisingly long silence,  and only after that came the cries for help. Afflicting parts of 24 states,  doing more than $32 billion in estimated damage,  Sandy left animal charities in the stricken regions without electricity,  telephone,  and Internet service for days or weeks,  even more than a month in some cases. 10,000 lab animals drowned at NYU due to stupidity, says lab care expert

 NEW YORK CITY–More than 10,000 mice and rats drowned or died from toxic fumes released by ruptured generator fuel and exhaust lines at the Joan and Joel Smilow Research Center on October 29, 2012.

Part of the Langone Medical Center at New York University, the Smilow Center occupies a 13-floor building,  but the mice and rats were housed in the basement,  more than 20 feet below the crest of the surge from Hurricane Sandy.  Apparently no one considered trying to evacuate them before the electricity failed and all personnel left on the premises were drafted to help evacuate 215 human patients from nearby Tisch Hospital. What becomes of turtles relinquished to Petco?

SAN DIEGO–Petco is recycling undersized turtles turned into stores by members of the public,  the 1,000-store pet supply chain acknowledged in response to recent PETA allegations,  and is doing business with a Louisiana turtle farm that sells turtles for human consumption to China,  but according to Petco,  the turtles sold to China are not the Petco turtles. N.Y. sues Angel’s Gate

ALBANY–New York state attorney general Eric Scheiderman on September 26,  2012 filed a lawsuit seeking the dissolution of the Angel’s Gate animal hospice in Delhi,  New York,  for allegedly failing to file accountability reports since 2008.  Moving to rural Delhi from Long Island after being fined $800 for noise violations in 2007,  Angel’s Gate founder Sue Marino was in May 2012 charged with 22 cruelty counts,  as a result of a PETA probe which followed visits and warnings from at least three other animal charities since 2009.

Pigeon shoot video appalls cattle industry magazine columnist

 READING,  Pennsylvania–Video from a September 30,  2012 pigeon shoot at the Wing Pointe hunt club near the Pennsylvania state capital in Harrisburg taken by Showing Animals Respect & Kindness founder Steve Hindi and investigator Stu Chaifetz did not persuade a Berks County judge to issue an injunction against further shoots on October 24,  2012.  But the judge “did relay that he would soon be issuing some sort of rules or guidelines that Wing Pointe would have to obey,”  SHARK said in a media release. NYC animal control chief resigns

NEW YORK,  N.Y.— The New York City Center for Animal Care & Control will have a new executive director for the ninth time in 10 years and the 12th time since 1994,  after the September 26,  2012 resignation of Julie Bank for “family reasons.”  Bank left on October 19,  2012,  six months after receiving a two-year contract extension and only two months after winning a $10 million city funding increase over the next three years,  after two years of budget cuts. Humane community stops Alabama vets from blocking low-cost s/n

MONTGOMERY--The Alabama Veterinary Medical Examiners Board on October 10,  2012 unanimously rejected a rule proposed by the Alabama Veterinary Practice Owners Association which could have closed all four nonprofit dog and cat sterilization clinics in the state.

California bans hunting black bears and bobcats with hounds

SACRAMENTO–California Governor Jerry Brown on September 26, 2012 signed into law SB 1221,  a bill banning the use of hounds to hunt black bears and bobcats.  The new California law came amid increasing recognition that hunting with hounds is more like dogfighting and the medieval practice of “baiting” tethered animals than it resembles hunting with weapons which can effect a quick kill. There are few quick kills when dogs chase wildlife,  often for hours,   in hunts that often culminate in the prey making a frantic last stand against the pursuing dogs. Read more

Lawsuit says spotlighting coyotes puts endangered red wolves at risk

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-The Southern Environmental Law Center, representing Defenders of Wildlife,  the Animal Welfare Institute, and the Red Wolf Coalition,  on October 23,  2012 asked Wake County Superior Court to issue a preliminary injunction against spotlight coyote hunting in North Carolina.  A hearing was expected to be held after ANIMAL PEOPLE went to press on October 30,  with a ruling possibly coming later in the week.
