Greyhound racing goes to the dogs

Bridgeport, Connecticut filed for Chapter 11
bankruptcy on July 16, six days after owner
A. Robert Zeff asked a federal judge to rule
that audio tapes were illegally seized in a
June 25 police raid on his Westport home. A
state police task force is reportedly probing
allegations that Zeff bribed former Connecticut
gaming policy board chair Francis Muska
and possibly other officials, seeking to avoid
questions about his financing. Zeff was
charged on June 27 with destroying evidence
and interfering with the search.

Greyhound racing may have run
its course in Wisconsin. Opened in April
1990, losing money ever since, the
Wisconsin Dells Greyhound Park in Lake
Delton is to close on September 10. The
track failed to gain attendance, as expected,
after the Fox Valley Greyhound Park in
Kaukauna closed in 1993. The St. Croix
Meadows track in Hudson is reportedly also
in trouble, losing $25 million since 1990.
Trainer David Jonathan Gibby,
26, was convicted by jury on June 21 in
Daytona Beach, Florida, of cruelly causing
the January 28 death a a two-year-old racing
greyhound by taking the dog from a veterinary
clinic where he was receiving treatment
for wounds suffered in a seven-dog attack at
the Daytona Beach Kennel Club.
