SAN FRANCISCO––A three-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on August 30, 2013 unanimously affirmed an earlier Los Angeles district court verdict that a statewide ban on the sale of foie gras may be enforced. Passed by the state legislature in 2004, the ban has been in effect since July 2012. It was introduced with an eight-year grace period to give foie gras producers time to find a production method other than force-feeding ducks and geese through tubes thrust down their throats, The ban was challenged by a coalition of chefs and foie gras producers led by Hudson Valley Foie Gras of New York state, the largest U.S. producer.
