The 37th annual Animal Trans-portation Association
conference, held May 22-25, 2011 in Brussels, Belgium, honored
Sharon Cregier, Ph.D., of Montague, Prince Edward Island, for
lifetime achievement in promoting the welfare of animals in
transport. An ANIMAL PEOPLE charter subscriber, Cregier may be best
known for research demonstrating that the safest way to haul horses
is facing backward–exactly the reverse of the most common
configuration of horse trailers.
The Humane Society of the U.S. in May 2011 received a 2011
People’s Choice Telly Award for the video Stallone: The Face of
Dogfighting. “In addition to receiving a 2011 Telly Award, this
video also played a key role in HSUS winning the Pepsi Refresh
Challenge grand prize of $250,000,” said HSUS publicist Katie Jarl.
Lifetime achievement awards were presented at the HSUS Animal
Care Expo in Orlando in May 2011 to Chinny Krishna and John Snyder.
Krishna, Blue Cross of India chief executive since 1964, in 1966
introduced the street dog sterilization project which in 1997 evolved
into the Indian national Animal Birth Control program (federally
funded since 2003). Snyder, heading HSUS companion animal welfare
programs sine 1998, announced his retirement after 36 years in the
animal welfare field. Recipients of Humane Society International
awards for animal advocacy included Tsunami Animal People Alliance
founder Robert Blumberg. Newly arrived in Sri Lanka when the
December 26, 2004 tsunami hit, Blumberg with initial funding from
Animal People hired mobile veterinary teams to help displaced and
injured animals, halted a rabies panic by vaccinating more than
14,000 dogs during the next two months, and then transitioned the
program into sterilizing dogs and cats. TAPA has now sterilized more
than 30,000 animals, many of them in areas that have only just
become accessible, after 30 years of a recently ended civil war.
Animal advocacy awards also were presented to the Sociedad Protectora
de Animals de Colombia, operating in Medallin since 1917, and to Du
Yufeng, director of the Universal Love Animal Protection Center in
Guangyuan, Sichuan state, China. In addition, HSI honored Xiao
Bing, director of the Animal Protection Education Committee in
Xiamen, China, for outstanding accomplishments in public education
for animal protection.
