Alice Anne Blackmore, 93, died on November 10, 2013 in Mason
City, Iowa. Finding an abandoned litter of puppies in 1959, Blackmore
founded the Mason City Pet Assistance League, operating first from the
basement of her family’s home, then from a converted chicken coop,
and eventually from a nearby farm. The organization became the Humane
Society of North Iowa in 1972. A shelter in a former veterinarian’s
office, donated in 1986 by longtime supporters David and Phyllis
Murphy, was replaced by the present 6,400-square-foot facility in 2009.

Sanjay Acharya, 26, is believed to have hanged himself on
December 2, 2013 at his rented home in Nayapalli, Orissa state,
India. Acharya had been field coordinator for the Wildlife & Nature
Conservation Trust of Bhubaneswar for about a year, after service with
other wildlife rescue charities in Delhi and Ooty.

Prasert Chumpol, an employee of Phu Kradueng National Park in
Thailand, was fatally trampled by elephants on December 5, 2013.

Paul Fay Holloway, 75, died on September 15, 2013. A
lifelong resident of Poquoson, Virgina, who met his late wife Barbara
Menetch Holloway at Poquoson High School, Holloway spent his entire
working life at the NASA Langley Research Center. He retired as center
director in 2002. A longtime cat rescuer, Barbara Holloway died in
2012. Cofounding the Poquoson Animal Welfare Sanctuary, Paul Holloway
left to it his childhood home, which had already been used informally
as a cat shelter since 1998. PAWS in October 2013 won a zoning variance
allowing the property to house up to 50 cats.

Paul “Bud” Tholl, 91, a Nevada Humane Society board member
since 1963, died on December 2, 2013 in Sparks, Nevada. He was the
second of three generations to head the Tholl Fence Company, founded in
1912.

Ting Sinhar, 30, of Karbi Anglong, Assam, India, a forest
guard at Kaziranga National Park since 2005, was killed on November 6,
2013 by a rhino who charged him from behind.
