Giza Zoo officials are caught telling grim fairy tale about how three bears died

CAIRO––Two days after the Giza Zoo announced that the female North American black bears Farah,  Lulu,  and Nabila had killed each other in a nine-hour brawl over a male bear on the evening of May 5,  2013,  the newspaper Al Watan revealed that the bears actually died from effects of over-sedation.  Two of the sedated bears reportedly suffered fatal injuries in falls,  while the third bear drowned.  Two other sedated bears were injured.   Read more

Colorado requires law enforcement training in dog behavior

DENVER––Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper on May 13,  2013 signed into law bills designating shelter animals the official state pet and requiring Colorado police and sheriff’s departments to provide personnel with three hours of online training on dog behavior recognition and the use of nonlethal dog control methods.  The training must be made available by September 1,  2014. Egg Products Inspection Act Amendments are excluded from the 2013 Farm Bill

WASHINGTON D.C.––The Egg Products Inspection Act Amendments of 2013,  written to implement a 2011 agreement between the Humane Society of the U.S. and United Egg Producers about laying hen cage sizes,  was not included in either the U.S. Senate or U.S. House of Representatives version of the 2013 Farm Bill. Vietnam replaces park director who tried to take over moon bear sanctuary

HANOI–Longtime Tam Dao National Park director Do Dinh Tien on April 30,  2013 lost his job,  after losing a two-year effort to evict the Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre from park property and redevelop the site as a “bear rescue and breeding center” open to the public,  adjacent to a hotel and other tourist accommodations and attractions.  The facilities were to be developed by the Truong Giang Tam Dao Joint Stock Company,  which listed Do Dinh Tien’s daughter Do Thi Ngan as one of four investors. The Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture & Rural Development on May 1,  2013 named former Tam Dao National Park deputy director Ha Cong Khai to succeed Do Dinh Tien,  reported An Dien of Thanh Nien News.
